Horrible means the same thing as horrific, so why doesn't terrible mean the same thing as terrific?

One of the definitions of terrific is "Causing terror".

The definition "causing terror" is archaic. Terrible and terrific both come from the Latin root 'terrere'. Horrible and horrific both come from the Latin root 'horrere'. Terrifying comes from a different root and horrifying comes from a different root though. Sometimes English is stupid.
